El Dorado Arkansas Area

El Dorado (el- duh-RAY-do) is the county seat of Union County, Arkansas, USA. El Dorado is the only city outside of Little Rock to host a state agency’s headquarters (the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission). Also, El Dorado is home to Fortune 500 companies, such as Murphy Oil Corporation, Deltic Timber Corporation, and Lion Oil Refinery.

The city contains a community college, South Arkansas Community College ("SouthArk"), a multi-cultural arts center: South Arkansas Arts Center (SAAC), an award-winning renovated downtown, and numerous sporting, shopping, and dining opportunities. The city is best known as being the heart of the 1920s oil boom in South Arkansas. Its nickname is "Arkansas’s Original Boomtown".

Starting with the class of 2007, Murphy Oil Corporation funded a unique endowment called “The El Dorado Promise.” This is a scholarship program that provides graduates of El Dorado High School with a scholarship covering tuition and mandatory fees that can be used at any accredited two- or four-year public or private educational institution in the US. The maximum amount payable is up to the highest annual resident tuition at an Arkansas public university.

El Dorado also is home to numerous state championships in multiple high school sports. In 2009, 2010 and again in 2011 The El Dorado High School Wildcats won state championships in 6A football bringing their total of football championships to eight! In 2011 The El Dorado High School Ladycats won their first ever state championship in 6A Basketball. In 2012 The El Dorado High School Wildcats won the 6A state championship in Baseball. El Dorado is also home to 8 state champion lady golf teams and 9 state champion men’s golf teams.
